Glue Ears or Otitis Media with Effusion

When there is accumulation of the fluid in the ear without infection, it is called glue eart. The causes of glue ears include

  1. Post Ear Infection
  2. Post Upper Respiratory Infection / SInusitis
  3. Large Adenoids
  4. Allergy
  5. Cleft Palate

The impact would be hearing loss as well as ear discomfort. If the hearing loss is bilateral, then the impact on a growing child is significant.

Treatment is by medication in the initial period. However if it persist beyond 3 months, Drainage via a myringotomy (incision in the ear dum) and insertion of a ventilation tube will resolved the issue. Often this is accompanied by an adenoidectomy.
