Allergies and sinusitis need to be treated first. If after correcting of these problems, the symptoms still persist, then we will then have to address the snoring.
The most often cause is an obstruction in the nasal air passage from the nose to the vocal cords. The obstuction can be n the following areas
Deviated Nasal Septum
The nasal septum separates the right and left nose. Birth trauma or a fall in early childhood may cause the septum to be misaligned. If the bend is significant, it can contribute to a blocked nose. A Septoplasty can correct the bend. This is done inside the nose and there are no scars. This is often done with a turbinate reduction.
Turbinate enlargement is caused by allergies and infection. Turbinate Reduction either by coblation or radio frequency technique is the treatment of choice.
Enlarged Adenoids & Tonsils
Removal of the enlarged Adenoids and Tonsils (Adenoidectomy & Tonsillectomy) will solve the problem in the majority of the patients as these are the usual culprits in snoring and sleep apnoea in children.
