1 in 5 US Teen Suffers Hearing Loss
Researchers in the US have found that 1 in 5 of US Teens suffers from hearing loss. This slight hearing loss can cause problems in school and lead to the need for hearing aids later on in life.
The researchers looked at data from 3000 young people (12 to 19 years old) tested from 1988 to 1994 and 1800 tested from 2005 to 2006. There was an increase from 15% to 19.5% of prevalence in hearing loss.
Most of the hearing loss is slight from 16 to 24 decibels (whisper or rustling leaves). The loss is most noticeable in the high frequency suggesting noise exposure is the cause.
An Australian study suggests that the increasing use of personal music devices was associated with a 70 % increased risk of hearing loss in children.
The trend probably applies to SIngapore teenagers as well. The effect may take years to be evident. Avoid excessive volume and over long periods when using your ipods or MP3 players.
If there is a concern, a hearing test will be able to detect if there is hearing loss.
